Weekend of September 16+17

kids hope usa: Making a difference in woodbury

It’s hard to believe that one hour of your time each week could alter the academic success of a child, but for over 10 years, Five Oaks has partnered with Kids Hope to provide the gift of mentorship to students at Woodbury Elementary. A KHUSA mentor offers one hour each week to one student in need of emotional, social, and academic support beyond what s/he normally receives in the classroom and at home. This small investment of a caring adult improves attitude, focus, performance, and confidence for these kids! Don’t have time to mentor? We’ve got plenty of other opportunities to serve with KHUSA: Prayer partners, support for events, communication, photo/video needs, organization, end of year gifts, and more! Is God nudging you? Email us here. Bonus! Show up this weekend and stop by the ministry cart in the commons to find out more!

So many ways to connect this fall

As our church continues to grow, so do the many opportunities for connection and discipleship. This weekend during our services you’ll learn a bit more about the many options available to adults. From small groups, that meet in people’s homes or at church on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, to Bible studies and connection points within women’s ministry, to our men’s pancake breakfast and weekly gatherings, to two different groups for young adults between the ages of 18-23 and 24-30, we have a wide varieity of connection points, prayer opportunities, and ways to grow deeper in community and in your faith. Questions? Email Jonathan Haage.

Backyard block party: Key deets!

By now you likely have heard we’re throwing a party for our new neighbors on September 29 outside our west entrance. It promises to be a great evening of yard games, food trucks, and a chance to meet our new neighbors! We’d love your prayers surrounding this event - prayers for our neighbors who will come, of course prayers for great weather, prayers for easy conversations and the start of important connections. Please register at www.fiveoaks.church/blockparty to help us plan well with food, and plan to bring your family and your readiness to help our newest neighbors feel welcomed in Woodbury and at Five Oaks! Questions? Please email Jonathan Haage, jhaage@fiveoakschurch.org.

Got a welcoming smile?
You know that awkward “I’m new here” feeling? We have lots of new neighbors and with that comes opportunities to expand our Connections Ministry. We’d like some friendly, smiling faces greeting at our west entrance, which for our new neighbors is now our second front door! We’re also looking for more volunteers on our concierge team to help new people get connected into the life of our church. Interested or have questions? Please email Laura-Paige Albert.

Baptism and Dedication classes September 24
Our next Faith Milestone Celebration is coming up in late October. To prepare for that weekend, we’d like to partner with your family to help prepare your children or students who are ready for baptism, and parents who are ready for dedication. Join us September 24 for these classes: Dedication class at 9 am; Baptism class at 10:45 am.

Do you love to write?
If you enjoy writing and might like to use your talents to bless our congregation, our DailyLife writing team would like to talk to you. We’re currently looking for writers to fill two different writing roles: a regular writer, who creates three days’ of content at a time (about once a month) and a Friday writer, who creates a weekly reflection piece based on content provided for that week. (about twice a month). Both positions include training, resources, and onboarding. Interested in either one? Email Liza Halverson.

Fall Story of God classes are now open for registration!
If you’d like to learn how to understand what you’re reading in the Bible, and how the Bible fits together to tell one big story, consider registering for the Story of God, a six-week guided journey through the Bible. We have four class starting this fall. All the details and registration is available here.

A record year for Hearts & Hammers
Last weekend, 61 volunteers (including 20 youth!) served at our annual Hearts and Hammers event organized by Journeymen. Volunteers painted, trimmed trees, and landscaped for the homeowners, Hank and Christine. The work done is impressive, but so is the lasting impact of the conversations, accordion playing, and time in community. The homeowners said, “This was one of the best days of my life.” For more info about Hearts and Hammers, put ‘Hammers’ on your connect card.

Coming soon to a commons near you!
One of our local IMPACT Partners, The Dwelling Place, offers safe transitional housing and Christ-centered supportive services for women and children who have suffered domestic abuse. We’ll be doing a supply drive in partnership with The Dwelling Place to provide household items  (dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, hand soap, etc) starting on September 30 through October 15. Complete shopping list will be available in the commons and be sure to add these items to your grocery pickup to benefit this important ministry. Questions?
